Mantra Japa with a Rudraksha Mala: A Beginner's Guide
Start your mantra practice the right way using a 108-bead Rudraksha mala.

What Is Japa?
Japa is the repetition of a mantra, often counted on a mala of 108 beads (plus one guru bead). The number 108 is considered sacred in many traditions and helps maintain focus and discipline.
How to Practice
- Choose a quiet time and place. Early morning is traditional.
- Hold the mala in your right hand, draped over your middle finger.
- Start at the bead next to the guru (sumeru) bead. Do not cross over the guru bead; reverse direction after 108.
- With each bead, repeat your chosen mantra (e.g., Om Namah Shivaya, or another given by your teacher).
- Complete one or more full rounds as your practice allows.
Choosing a Mantra
Common mantras for Rudraksha include Om Namah Shivaya (five syllables) and Om. If you have a guru or tradition, follow their guidance. Consistency and sincerity matter more than the number of rounds.
